Job Title: Director, Children and Family Ministries
Type: Permanent and Full Time
Reports to: Senior Pastor and Head of Staff
Objective: The Children and Family Ministries (CFM) Director is responsible for superintending all activities associated with Vacation Bible School, JAM (mid-week Bible club), the Spiritual Renewal Conference children’s program, the nursery and children’s Sunday School programs, including the organization of a “Workshop Rotation” model for the Sunday School program. He/She will work directly with the Preschool Director and Student and Family Ministries Director to ensure continuity with and between all three youth programs.
Areas of Responsibility:
Leadership:
1. Work with the CFM team to define and articulate the vision, goals, and activities of the CFM and to ensure they are in concert with the vision and goals of JKPC
2. Develop and maintain an awareness of Children’s Ministries and communicate the vision to the congregation and community.
3. Coordinate the ministry and activities of the CFM with other ministries and staff.
4. Encourage, equip and support the staff, elders, teachers and caregivers in the CFM.
Teacher Recruitment, Training and Teaching:
1. Reach out and build relationships with members of the congregation. Learn people’s strengths and interests with a view to effective recruiting.
2. Build a self-sustaining recruitment system of teachers and volunteers; seek help in concert with CFM team and Session.
3. Create standards and procedures for training and safety-screening a full staff to accomplish the ministry of all CFM programs.
4. Coordinate, review, select and purchase appropriate Biblically based curriculum.
5. Formulate a scope and sequence of learning for all ages.
6. Be present on Sunday mornings to network with parents.
7.Support teachers/caregivers in this ministry with appropriate forms of appreciation (formal/informal)
8. Be able to step into a teaching role in a class if necessary.
Staff and Congregational Relations:
1. Represent CFM to Staff, Session and other groups
2. Report to the Senior Pastor and to the Session
3. Attend Staff meetings and Session meetings
4. Work with other ministry staff to achieve a cooperative church-wide ministry and carry out the requests and policies of Session.
5. Communicate and cooperate closely with the Preschool Director (with regard to shared facilities) and SFM Director to ensure ministry coordination and continuity.
6. Communicate with operations administrator and others as needed to maintain budget expenditures, coordinate building use, and obtain administrative and custodial support.
7. Hold parent information meetings (at least one annually).
Programs:
1. Superintend the following:
* Sunday School programs including a “Workshop Rotation”
* Vacation Bible School (summer)
* Nursery program, via a paid Nursery Coordinator
* Special events programs for children, including the Spiritual Renewal Conference (spring)
* JAM (“Jesus and Me”) mid-week Bible club
2. Plan and implement quarterly events that are specifically designed for whole family involvement
3. Work in coordination with the SFM to transition 6th graders successfully into the SFM program as they enter junior high school.
4. Develop ways to successfully encourage non-churched families that attend JKPC events to begin attending church.
Administration:
1. Work with and utilize the talents of other staff and volunteers in the daily administration of the ministry.
2. Provide administration oversight to inventory purchase of supplies as well as tracking and reporting of expenditures.
3. Calculate the needed operating expenses for the department and prepare a proposed annual budget.
4. Be responsible for communications with parents and church body by sending out newsletters, emails, bulletin boards and announcements in the church worship folder.
5. Plan agenda for monthly CFM meetings and provide direction in writing of minutes and delivery of minutes to Session clerk.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Early Childhood Development or similar field, or equivalent experience.
2. Three to five years experience as director of children’s ministries in a similar size or larger church.
3. Experience in curriculum development highly desirable.
4. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills mandatory.
5. Must be computer literate in Microsoft Office.
